the new interface for the Revised Common Lectionary
Released for testing: 03.02.2009
Last updated: 03.02.2009
The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) is a schedule of Biblical readings that coincide with the Christian church year calendar. Established by the The Consultation on Common Texts, the RCL is used by Protestant and Catholic churches worldwide." The web version of the RCL was first published by the Vanderbilt Divinity Library in 1996 and was one of the earliest destination websites available for religion/theology.
This new version of the Revised Common Lectionary website is a response to requests from our users and to technological changes. Many new features have been added, such as printing and downloading functions.
The Revised Common Lectionary has added a number of new images paired with reflective essays and spiritual quotations. New art images are added regularly.
The texts of the Revised Common Lectionary Prayers are now linked to the weekly readings within the Revised Common Lectionary. This has been made possible with the cooperation of The Committee on Common Texts and Augsburg Fortress Press.
This is the first public beta release of the new interface for the Revised Common Lectionary. Your comments, suggestions for improvement, and bug reports are essential in making this new site a success!
the new interface for DiscoverArchive
Released for testing: 01.27.2009
Last updated: 01.27.2009
DiscoverArchive is the Vanderbilt University digital repository. DiscoverArchive showcases Vanderbilt faculty scholarly work, preserves historically significant digital materials, and supports the university in scholarly communications and the dissemination of knowledge. DiscoverArchive was recently given a “face-lift”. The color used with the DiscoverArchvie theme reflects our new library search tool, DiscoverLibrary, and, to tie in the Jean and Alexander Heard Library, both headers and footers were added.
The new user interface is a front end called Manakin. Manakin is an aspect and XSL theme based interface that was packaged with a recent upgrade to DSpace (1.5), the open source application running DiscoverArchive. Manakin represents a separation the interface from the application making future upgrades and application modifications easier.
A main feature of Manakin is the ability to adapt different user interfaces according to the specific needs of the repository as a whole, an individual community, or, even a collection. This separation allows content to be branded creating a unique look-and-feel.

One of the strategic goals outlined by the Digital Library Steering Committee was to investigate the use of a content management system for better management, display and control of Web content. The DLSC investigated several options and determined that the open source product Drupal might best meet the evolving needs of the library. The DLSC decided to launch a pilot project using Drupal to both update the current staffweb and gain some experience with this tool. The Web Management Group was tasked with evaluating the current staffweb and determining what new services and features would be of interest to staff and which current aspects of the staffweb were no longer needed. The Communications Committee was also active in helping evaluate better means of communicating with staff. An enthusiastic staff response to a survey, generated an excellent list of improvements which have now been incorporated into the first beta release of the new Staffweb.
Some of these new features include:
- Three days of staff news posted daily through an RSS feed from the current library staff news
- An events calendar
- A photo gallery which also generates a new image upon “refresh” to the front page
- Staff videos
- Tabbed access to important staff resources
- Daily library related posts
- Polls
(and much much more!)
